MSME / SME Loans
The question is rarely whether an MSME can borrow. It is which structure fits — a term loan against machinery, a cash credit limit sized to your working capital cycle, or a scheme-linked facility that removes the collateral requirement altogether. Choosing wrongly is expensive: businesses routinely fund a two-year asset with a facility that has to be renewed every twelve months, then spend each renewal cycle proving themselves again.
Term loans are repaid on a fixed schedule and suit assets with a life longer than the loan — plant, machinery, a commercial vehicle. Working capital facilities are revolving and sized against your operating cycle: receivables plus inventory, less creditors. A business with 90-day receivables and a term loan on a 36-month EMI will feel squeezed every month, and no amount of negotiating the interest rate fixes that.
On scheme-linked credit
MUDRA and CGTMSE are not products you apply for directly — they are routed through participating lenders, and the lender decides whether to place your file under the scheme at all. Some branches avoid it because it adds a guarantee fee and paperwork. Ask explicitly whether yours is being routed under CGTMSE: it is a reasonable question, and the answer determines whether you are pledging collateral. Availability, criteria and timelines are set by the lender and the scheme authority, not by us.
Beyond the checklist below, two things decide most MSME files. The first is bank statement conduct — cheque returns, sustained overdrawn balances, and circular transfers between related accounts are read as stress regardless of what the P&L says. The second is whether GST returns, ITR and the financials tell the same story. Where declared turnover in the GST returns and the ITR diverge, the lender takes the lower figure and asks why.
